Steven J. Belden, age 62, of North Billerica, passed away surrounded by his family at the Lahey Hospital in Burlington on Thursday, November 6, 2025, after a brief illness.
He was born in Derby, CT on November 25, 1962 to the late Russell and Elizabeth (Simmon) Belden, and was raised in Shelton, CT.
Steve graduated from St. Joseph High School in Trumbull, CT in 1980. He attended Western New England College (WNEC) in Springfield, MA, earning a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering in 1984. After graduation, Steve worked as a Test Engineer for the U.S. Dept of the Army at the Picatinny Arsenal in Wharton, NJ. He then worked as a Principal Electromagnetic and Nuclear Effects Engineer at The Mitre Corporation in Bedford, MA for 38 years, and had recently retired.
Steve enjoyed family time, and going to Long Beach Island, NJ in the off-season. He loved a good cup of coffee, beer (maybe a Pilsner or Porter), playing golf, watching Premiere League Soccer (favorite Team: Liverpool), playing the guitar, reading, and preparing delicious dinners. His favorite TV viewing included Jeopardy, detective shows on Britbox, and British comedy panel shows like Taskmaster. Those who knew Steve knew of his encyclopedic knowledge of music history, especially the vibrant eras of Rock and New Wave.
He is survived by his wife Anne (Tagliareni) Belden, whom he met the first night of freshman orientation at WNEC in August 1980. They married in April 1988 and moved to Billerica. He is also survived by: sons Scott, Shawn and Christian, and Christian’s fiancée Aimee Ouellette (all of North Billerica); sister-in-law Beverly Belden (Shelton, CT); brother Gary and wife Karen (Derby, CT); brother Donald and wife Anne (Sarasota, FL); mother-in-law Rosemary Tagliareni (Wakefield, MA); in-laws Mary Lou and Erik Fyrwald (Wilmington, DE), Susan and James Daly (Melrose, MA), and Joan Tagliareni (Brookline, MA); as well as nephews, nieces, cousins, and many good friends. He was predeceased by his parents and his oldest brother, Richard.
A memorial visitation will be held Friday, November 14 at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Road, Billerica from 4:00-7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, November 15 at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish at St. Andrew Church, 45 Talbot Ave, North Billerica at 10:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Steven’s name to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org .
