Paul J. Holmes – Age 101, beloved husband of the late Gertrude D. (Duffy) Holmes died peacefully Thursday, August 15 at Heatherwood Gracious Retirement Living in Tewksbury with his family at his side.
He was born in Lowell, July 23, 1923, a son of the late William V. and Honora (Powers) Holmes and lived in Billerica all of his life. Paul proudly served in the U.S. Navy during WW II.
He was a graduate of Keith Academy and received his Bachelor’s Degree at the University of Lowell. Paul became a Police Officer for the Town of Billerica in 1950 and retired as a Captain after 38 years of service.
He was an active communicant of St. Theresa Church and was a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society, the Billerica Knights of Columbus and was active with the Red Cross Blood Drive in Billerica.
He is survived by his daughters, Judy Holmes and her wife Nancy Cataldo of Littleton and Carol Holmes and her husband, Michael Eisenberg of Melrose; his son, Paul Holmes Jr. of Newbury, NH and is also survived by his four grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday, August 18 at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 1-4 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish at St. Theresa Church, 466 Boston Rd., Billerica at 10 a.m. His burial with military honors will be held at the Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica. Memorial contributions may be made in Paul’s name to St. Vincent DePaul Society, One Grace Ave., Billerica, MA 01821.
