Obituary for Paul Edward Sullivan
SULLIVAN, Paul Edward Paul Edward Sullivan, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and uncle, died early Saturday morning, August 11, 2018, at his home in North Billerica after a short illness. Born in Marlborough, Massachusetts on April 6, 1934, a beloved son of the late Grace (Parker) and John Sullivan, he was the fifth of seven children. A 1951 graduate of Marlborough High School, Paul played varsity football and served as class treasurer all four years. Following his graduation from Worcester State College, he began his career as a math teacher at Hopkinton High School, then taught and coached at Bedford High School. He earned two masters degrees, first from Bridgewater State College then UNC in Chapel Hill, after which he chaired the math department at Oliver Ames High School in North Easton. Always eager for new adventures, he was awarded several National Science Foundation grants for summer study at Penn State, MSU, and University of Illinois in Champaign, bringing his family of seven to campus each summer. A respected and beloved teacher and colleague, he retired in 1990, young enough to enjoy a new life chapter. The loving husband of Patricia (MacPherson) Sullivan for almost sixty years, Paul was also the cherished father of five children and their spouses: Kathleen Sullivan and Richard Ferrara of Merrimac; Anne and Tarik Soydan of Acton; Beth Sullivan and Kate Sacco of Billerica; Christine Molinaro of Westford, and Daniel and Karen Sullivan of Beverly Cove. "Da" will be greatly missed by all seven grandchildren, Steven and Elizabeth Ferrara, Joseph Soydan, Nicholas and Benjamin Molinaro, and Olivia and Harrison Sullivan. Paul is predeceased by sisters Jean Santos and Eileen Sullivan, and brothers John, Richard, and William. He leaves his youngest brother Robert of Westborough. He was a kind and loving brother-in-law and uncle to his extended family. Always delighting in the company of his large and loving family, he spent final days in his favorite chair overlooking Winnings Pond. An ardent walker, he was a familiar figure on his twice daily treks around the soccer fields and wooded paths of Vietnam Veterans Park. Over the years, he came to know many fellow walkers and addressed their pets by name. Often accompanied by his wife, his daughter Beth, and any other family member who was ready to walk precisely at 10 AM or 3 PM, these daily encounters were a source of immense pleasure for all. Paul was an avid Red Sox fan and devoted to nature and the outdoors. He loved climbing the White Mountains and walking the beaches of Ogunquit, Beverly Cove, and Cape Cod. He was also a carpenter, a craft he learned from his beloved uncle Edward Parker, building a wonderful vacation house in Maine, several memorable screen porches, and countless home projects for his family. Most especially, Da had a deep abiding love for each and every member of his family, and he was cherished by each of them in return. His wit, his stories, his resounding laugh, but most notably his generous heart made him a giant to all who knew him. He was smart, funny, irreverent, and kind. He will be sorely missed. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday, August 21, 2018 at St. Irene Church, 187 East Street, Carlisle, MA at 10 AM. To honor his wishes, there will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may be made in Paul's memory to the Middlesex East Visiting Nurse Hospice, 800 West Cummings Park, Suite 5000, Woburn, MA, 01801.
