Obituary for George J. Bowman

George J. Bowman – Age 74, beloved husband of Sandra A. (Charpentier) Galvin died peacefully Saturday, March 11 at the Lahey Hospital in Burlington.

George was born in West Chester, Pennsylvania on December 1, 1948, son of the late George J. and Rebecca G. (Manley) Bowman and was raised in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. Before moving to Billerica 15 years ago, he lived in San Ramon California.

George proudly served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War era where he began his IT career as a programmer for enlisted personnel at the Atlantic Fleet data processing facility. In 2007 he retired from LAM Research in Fremont CA where he was IT Director.

He was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Billerica and an enthusiastic member of the choir as well as the accompanist to the youth choir since October of 2011. Over the years, he served on nearly every ministry and committee of the church.

George was a man of great kindness and integrity. He always said, “what you see is what you get.” And what you got was love and laughter and often his opinion, whether you wanted it or not. He was always ready to lend a hand in whatever way was needed. He loved the outdoors and any kind of weather. Rain or shine or snow, he walked several miles each day and knew the name of every dog for miles around his neighborhood.

George was preceded in death by his beloved son Patrick Bowman. He is survived by his wife, Sandy and sons Michael Bowman of Thousand Oaks, CA, Andy Bowman (Sandy) of Ft. Collins, CO, Gary Galvin (April Sullivan) of Billerica, Scott Galvin (Leslie) of Franklin, his sisters, Janet Hannum and Linda Bowman of Coatesville, PA and is also survived by five grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, March 26 at the First Congregational Church, 18 Andover Rd., Billerica at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the First Congregational Church.
