Obituary for James J. O'Brien
BILLERICA – James J. O’Brien, age 65, died Tuesday unexpectedly at his home.
He was born in Boston, March 27, 1951 a son of the late Joseph F. and Alicia (Curran) O’Brien. Jim lived in Somerville, Woburn and Burlington before moving to Billerica in 1992.
Mr. O’Brien served as a Corporal in the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War (1968-1971), and as a Specialist in the US Army supporting NATO from 1974-1976. Following military service, Jim worked as a Heavy Equipment Operator for the Burlington Department of Public Works (DPW).
Jim was a former commander of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars (VFW) Solomon Post in Billerica, as well as, the Burlington American Legion, in addition to being a member of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) and would volunteer helping homeless veterans in Boston with his daughter Erin O'Brien. Jim lovingly nicknamed himself "Jungle Jim" and was famously known for his love and pride for his daughter, his quick wit, swift dance moves, charismatic charm, stubborn Irish temper and big heart. His love for his Marine brothers kept him fiercely loyal to the core by serving the families of his fellow vets ensuring they received the benefits to which they were entitled.
Jim is survived by one daughter, Erin O'Brien of Lowell who shared his love of dance, quick wit, humor, big heart and charm; three sisters, Patricia Madison and her husband Dan of Baltimore, MD and Jay Arnaudet and her husband Gerry of Marshfield Hills, MA and Leita O'Brien of Somerville; his former wife Sheila Cunniff and her husband Paul of Billerica as well as several nieces, nephews and friends.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday at the SWEENEY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 66 Concord Rd. , Billerica from 1 – 4 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday at the Immaculate Conception Church , 3 Fayette St . , Lowell at 9:30 a.m. Burial in Fox Hill Cemetery 130 Andover Rd. , Billerica. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the VFW Solomon Post, 12 Phiney St. Billerica , MA 01821 .
