Susan L. (Smith) St. Cyr, 71, beloved wife of James T. St. Cyr Jr., passed away unexpectedly in her home on Monday, January 26, 2026.
Susan was born on February 22, 1954 in Springfield, MA, to the late James and Mary (Dwinell) Smith. She spent her childhood years in Longmeadow and received her education at Mt. Vernon College. She later moved to the Beacon Hill neighborhood of Boston and attended the Katharine Gibbs School. Susan and Jim met while working at Energy Resources Company in Cambridge and settled in Billerica, where they raised their two daughters, Katie and Lauren.
Susan was a natural caregiver. Above all, her greatest joy in life was being a mother. She raised her daughters with endless love and care. She encouraged their passions, never missing a gymnastics meet, orchestra performance, or chance to celebrate their academic accomplishments. Susan was immensely proud of the women they have become and never missed an opportunity to talk about them with anyone who would listen. No words can truly capture just how loving, devoted, and amazing of a mother Susan was to her daughters. Motherhood was at the heart of who she was.
Susan was incredibly devoted to her husband, family, and loved ones. You could always depend on Susan to give her time and talents to others. She has remained a constant source of love and support through many of life’s difficult moments. Susan never failed to bring a smile to her family’s faces when she showed up to any holiday or gathering with her famous cheesecake in hand. She loved to serve others, and did so without complaint or want for any praise. Her family will remember all she has done for them with overwhelming gratitude.
Susan was also an active member in the Billerica community. Her dedication to volunteering and helping others was an extension of her role as a caregiver. She was an involved member of the First Congregational Church in Billerica, as well as many local groups including the Billerica Holiday Festival Committee, the Garden Club, and Billerica Friends of the Library. Susan also volunteered for the Yankee Doodle Homecoming, the Beautification Committee, and worked the polls at every election. You could find her at any of these groups’ events with a smile on her face, ready to help and serve however was needed, or striking up a conversation with any passerby with the warmth of an old friend. She never complained, gave selflessly, and volunteered faithfully and without fanfare. If you were lucky enough to have known Susan, it was easy to see her volunteer work came from her truly saint-like spirit.
In addition to her husband, Susan is survived by their two loving daughters, Katie Brooks and her husband Tom of Billerica, and Lauren St. Cyr of Dracut; her two brothers, James Smith and his wife Joan of VA, and George Smith and his wife Debbie of FL; her mother-in-law Kathleen St. Cyr of Billerica, sister-in-law Kathleen Huntley and her husband Wayne of Andover, and her two brothers-in-law, Paul St. Cyr and his wife Kelly, and Kevin St. Cyr, both of Lowell. She is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, and countless dear friends.
A funeral service will be held at First Congregational Church in Billerica (and via zoom) on Saturday, February 7, 2026 at 10:00AM, followed by a private burial. Susan’s family will honor her memory with a Celebration of Life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any of the groups Susan volunteered with named above or another local organization.
