Obituary for Stephen B. Finn

Beloved and devoted husband, brother, uncle, and friend, Stephen (Steve) B. Finn, 62 of Dracut, MA died unexpectedly on January 7th, 2024. He lived his life with passion, creativity, hard work, and humor.

Born in Lowell, MA, the son of Mary T. (Shine) and Albert F. Finn, Jr., Steve grew up in Billerica and was the star of the Billerica High School band--especially the jazz band--playing all woodwind instruments, but mostly the tenor saxophone. A gifted musician, he started playing ‘gigs’ at local establishments while in High School.

Steve continued on at Berklee College of Music Summer Jazz program. There, he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Performance and afterwards played in many local bands. He also was featured on several recordings.

Steve had also learned the craft of carpentry while building houses with his father and brother. He went on to start his own home-building company, and as a contractor, built several homes in the Merrimack Valley and southern New Hampshire.

Before tying the knot with the Love of His Life, Brenda and Steve purchased a plot of land in Dracut. Together, they built their home and have lived there for the last 40 years.

Steve had spent his time in Dracut on other creative projects: cooking gourmet meals and building extensive garden-areas on their property, landscaping with gardens, a fish pond, waterfall, and a gazebo, so that Brenda could follow her passion for gardening. There was never a day that Steve wasn’t outside building sheds, stone walls and walkways, mixing concrete, or chopping wood, all of which added beauty and comfort to their lives.

Steve also had a passion for being on the water and boating, spending his childhood summers on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Later he would take sailing lessons in Boston Harbor and become a Certified Bareboat Cruising captain for sailboats up to 40 feet. He and Brenda spent the last 20 years sailing their own sloop, WindSpirit in and around Salem and the coast of Massachusetts.

Steve is survived by his wife of 40 years, Brenda R. (Woodbury) Finn of Dracut, two brothers: John Finn and wife Nicci Finn of Kingston, NH, Albert Finn, III of Hope Mills, North Carolina; a sister, Dianne Chisholm and husband Chris Chisholm of Connecticut, many beloved nieces and nephews, friends, and his cherished cat, Dewey.

A Celebration of Life for Steve will be held Sunday, January 21st from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Finz Seafood Restaurant, 86 Wharf Street, Pickering Wharf, Salem, MA.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to one of the following: Tunnels to Towers Foundation, Wounded Warrior Project, Shriner's Hospital for Children, or the MSPCA.
