Shirley M. Foley – Age 94, died peacefully Sunday, March 16 at her home surrounded by her loving family.
She was born in Winchester, September 1, 1930, a daughter of the late John and Gladys (Plourde) Foley and was raised in Billerica. She later moved to Mississippi working for Civil Rights before returning to Charlestown and then back to Billerica two years ago.
Shirley graduated from Howe High School in 1947 before attending Salem State University. After graduating she was employed as a teacher on the North Shore and Mississippi before becoming an attorney and real estate agent working for many years in Charlestown. She was an avid runner competing in 13 marathons, 11 of those were the Boston Marathon. She prided herself on finishing her last race at 70 years old.
She is survived by her nieces and nephews, Kathy Matheson and husband Bill of Billerica, John Foley and his wife Coleen of Cumberland, RI, James Michael Foley of Lowell and Patty Higgins of Billerica and many more family members and friends.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, March 20 at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 4-7 p.m. A funeral mass will be held Friday at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish at St. Theresa Church, 466 Boston Rd., Billerica at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Shirley’s name to St. Vincent De Paul Society, Charlestown, Ma. Her burial will take place at the Fox Hill Cemetery in Billerica.
