Robert P. “Bob” Desmond, age 87; beloved husband of Paula M. (Yeramian) Desmond, died Tuesday, July 2, 2024 at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Boston on July 5th, 1936, and was the son of the late James Desmond and Marjorie (Hurley) Desmond. He lived in Charlestown where he met the love of his life, Paula Yeramian. After marrying in 1959, they settled in Billerica in 1968 and raised their family.
For many years prior to his retirement, Bob was a Stationary Steam Engineer at Massport. He was a devoted coach of Billerica Pop Warner football as well as a leader of Troop 54 Boy Scouts in Billerica. He was a devout Catholic, teaching CCD and Bible Study for several years at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish at St. Theresa Church.
Bob will always be remembered for being a people person who was always happy; a compassionate, complimentary man who was very outgoing. He was a family man whose grandchildren were his entire world.
Besides his wife, Bob is survived by one son and three daughters, Anne Gallant and her husband Charles of Billerica, Mark Desmond of Billerica, Karen Debreceni and her husband Paul of Dunstable, and Kathleen Mercer and her husband Robert of Billerica; his siblings, Donald Desmond and his wife Judy of Bridgewater, Stephen Desmond and his wife Joyce of Chelmsford, and Janet Black and her husband Wayne of Charlestown. His greatest joy was the birth of his first grandchild Rob Gallant and that joy multiplied with the addition of Kelly Gallant, Erin Desmond and her fiancé Dan Fitzpatrick, Alex and Jamie Debreceni, Casey and Shannon Mercer and two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Danielle Gallant. He will also be greatly missed by his beloved nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bob was predeceased by his siblings, James Desmond, William Desmond, Richard Desmond, Marjorie Peterson and Patricia Desmond.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, July 5th at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 4-7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, July 6, at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish at St. Theresa Church, 466 Boston Rd., Billerica at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Interment in Fox Hill Cemetery in Billerica. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org.
