Robert J. Cole – (Bob, Monk) age 80, beloved husband of Donna M. (Russo) Cole died unexpectedly Wednesday, February 7 at the Lahey Hospital in Burlington with his family at his side.
He was born in Boston, January 22, 1944; a son of the late Kenneth Cole Sr. and the late Mary V. (McLaughlin) Cole. He was raised in Chelsea and later moved to Billerica in 1978 after marrying the love of his life, Donna. Bob proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was active in the veteran community until the very end. He was always so proud to be a veteran.
Bob was active in sports while living in Chelsea and was a Captain of his Football team and later enjoyed coaching for the Chelsea rec department. He was affectionately known as “Monk”. He was employed for the United States Postal Service having proudly worked in the S. Boston and Arlington Offices and retired after over 28 years of service.
Bob was a kind and gentle giant with a heart of pure gold. He was always quick with a joke and could lighten any mood. He had a smile and spirit that was so infectious.
Besides his wife, Bob is survived and deeply mourned by his daughters, Lauren Lowry and her husband Evan of Nashua and Vanessa Cole of Nashua; his brothers, Kenneth Cole Jr. of NJ and Kevin Cole of Plymouth; his sister, Claudette Cole of E. Boston and his two beloved grandchildren, Claire and Layne Lowry.
Visiting hours will be held Sunday, Feb. 11 at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 1-4 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Monday at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish at St. Andrew Church, Talbot Ave., N. Billerica at 10 a.m. His burial with military honors will be held at the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org
