Obituary for Robert B. Accomando

Robert B. Accomando – Age 75, loving husband of Cathy-Ann (Mayer) Accomando died peacefully Friday, July 24 at the Lahey Hospital in Burlington with his family at his side.

Bob left this earth too soon for all of us to understand. It is what he has left behind that will fill our hearts forever. No matter in which of his many roles you knew or had met Bob, you will always remember him for his wit and sense of humor and LOVE of sports especially the Boston Celtics.

Robert “Bob” was born on November 2, 1950, in Somerville Ma. of the late Edward and Leah (DiLorenzo) Accomando, the middle of three children growing up in Medford Ma. His older brother Edward and he kept his mother guessing what mischief was up next for them, when their little sister Marianna was born, she had two determined protectors. The bond only strengthened between the siblings as their families grew, introducing spouses and adding nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews. The extended family continues to celebrate family events together large or small and doors are always open at each other’s homes.

Cathy and Bob’s story began with a connection that made them both want to see where it would take them, 47 years later they were still those two young people, in love and putting the other one before themselves, always by each other’s side.

There was an uncommon and deeply respected relationship between Bob, and Cathy’s parents, Ed and Louise Mayer; that closeness continued until their passing. The love shared between them was strong and the entire family often gathered together.

If you lived in or around Billerica, you may have known Bob as the cheerful smiling guy that was behind the counter at the former JJ Cleaners where he was Managing Partner or as the friendly owner of Ma’s Dry Cleaning and Stepping Out Formal.

He may be best known as the jovial coworker at the Billerica Police Department where he was a dispatcher for over 20 years and where many lasting friendships began.

Moving to Billerica in 1973, Bob loved living and working in Town and enjoyed serving his community. He served as a Selectman for two terms, as a Town Meeting Member and he was on the Zoning Board of Appeals.

Lake Winnisquam was a favorite place to relax, and he enjoyed taking guests out on “Bear’s Barge”, his aptly named pontoon boat. He earned the nickname “bear”, and many will remember his welcoming bear hugs whenever he greeted you, whether he had seen you yesterday or months ago.

Affectionately called “Uncle Bob” by family and friends alike, he was easy to find in any room, look for the tall man, with the well-trimmed beard, smile on his face and the many friends gathered around in pure laughter. His vast network of friends were always there to support him and they will now cherish those memories.

in addition to his wife Cathy, Bob leaves behind; his brother, Edward Accomando and his wife Mary Sheila Prout of Andover and their children Justin, Aynslie, Joshua, Peter and Ian; and his sister, Marianna Accomando-Taylor and her husband George Taylor of Scituate and their children Nicholas and Emma; also Cathy’s family; her sister Sue Mayer of Bedford; her sister Paula Krochune and her husband Russell of Billerica and her daughter Tamara; and her brother Christopher Mayer and his wife AnnMarie of Pelham, NH and their children Nicole and Eric and many extended members of their families and friends.

Visiting hours will be held Monday, July 27 at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 3-7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish at St. Theresa Church at 10 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made in Bob’s name to the Billerica Community Pantry, P.O. Box 285, Billerica, MA 01821. His burial will take place at the Fox Hill Cemetery in Billerica.
