Obituary for Richard N. Crump
Richard “Dick” Northridge Crump, age 76, died Saturday, September 16 at home with his family after a long battle with cancer.
He was born in Wellesley, MA on February 22, 1940 to Alfred and Alice Crump and spent his childhood there graduating from Wellesley High School in 1959. Dick then earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Education from Boston University.
Dick went on to teach in the Reading School District for 37 years, serving the majority of the time as a School Psychologist at the Barrows Elementary School. It was while teaching that he met the love of his life, Joan, who he remained married to for 50 years. As a teacher, he was a caring and thoughtful counselor to thousands of children and made each of them feel special. In addition to teaching, Dick painted houses for over 30 years during summers. He often worked alongside his three sons, painting hundreds of houses in the Reading area.
Dick lived in Billerica, MA for 29 years with his wife where they raised their family. Dick volunteered for many years as a Little League baseball coach, and later could always be found in the stands or on the side lines watching his three sons play numerous sports in town. After retiring in 2000, Dick and Joan moved to Centerville, MA where they lived for 15 years before moving to Londonderry, NH. They loved the ocean and being on Cape Cod. Dick was always eager to take his friends and family that visited on rides to tour his favorite spots on the Cape.
Dick had an incredible personality that would light up any room he entered. While not large in stature, he made up for it in character. He was a caring and thoughtful person who was as quick with a joke as he was to help a friend in need. He was an avid Boston sports fan, especially the Red Sox, and loved watching the games with his sons and grandchildren. Above all else, family and friends were most important to Dick.
Dick was survived by his wife, Joan, who he cared for more than the world, his sister, Lois Griffin, his three sons, Kevin and his wife Karen, Sean and his wife Molly, and Terry and his wife Susan, and his eight grandchildren, Ryan, Dan, Cameron, Jack, Maura, Aiden, Ellie, and Richie, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held Monday at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 4-7 p.m. A Celebration of Life will be held Tuesday at the Courtyard by Marriott, 270 Concord Rd., Billerica at 11 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jimmy Fund, P.O. Box 849168, Boston, MA 02284.
