Nathaniel B. Windham, age 90, beloved husband of Joan M. Windham, died Wednesday, August 13th at his home in Billerica with his family by his side.
Born in Columbus, Mississippi on August 10, 1935, Nathaniel was born to the late William and Beulah (Thornton) Windham.
Nathaniel grew up on a farm in Columbus, Mississippi. While in high school during a summer vacation, he was part of a work study program as a courier for the FBI. In the process, he attained his secret clearance. After graduating high school, he joined the Army and attended engineer school and communications school for Morse code. While in comm. school at Fort Devens Mass., he met his future wife Joan. Soon he received orders and shipped to Germany for a few years. He was injured while there and was shipped home for discharged in 1958.
Upon his return, he and Joan were united again; a year later they were married. For the next decade, they moved back and forth between Massachusetts and Mississippi two times. During these times Nathaniel worked as a Milkman, Lumberjack, Fireman and a Crane Operator. Finally in 1969 Nat and Joan with three kids in tow settled in Billerica Mass. He worked as a crane operator throughout the Boston Metropolitan area until his retirement. In his retirement wood working was his passion and he loved his family.
Nathaniel is survived by his wife of 66 years, Joan M. (Kennedy) Windham; his daughters, Sandy Miller, and her husband Mike of Hampton Beach, NH, Regina Peneau, and her husband Fred of Richlands, NC; his son, Mark Windham of Jacksonville, NC.
He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A Celebration of Nathaniel’s Life will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2025 in the Billerica Elks Lodge #2071, 14 Webb Brook Road, Billerica from 1-5 p.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.
