
Obituary for Michael J. Sweeney
Michael J. “Mike” Sweeney age 72 of Billerica passed away peacefully on May 22, 2021 surrounded by his loving family after a period of declining health. He was born on August 22, 1948 in Cambridge MA, son of the late Paul and Edwina (Mullin) Sweeney.
Mike grew up in Watertown MA and was a 1966 graduate of Don Bosco High School in Boston. After graduation he joined the IBEW Local 103 of Boston and has been a proud member for 54 years. He was an active member of the Billerica and Watertown Elks and would often be seen volunteering at many activities or socializing with his friends.. He was a former coach for the Billerica Little League and was responsible for the initial lighting of the Vining School fields, something he was always proud of. Mike also attended St. Luke’s School in Belmont and to this day would get together with his classmates and reminisce about the “good times.”
Mike had a love for music, fine cars and most of all his family. He would often have music playing, especially The Temptations, Chicago or Hall and Oates. He loved his Corvettes and was so proud of the day he had one of his own. Mike loved taking his grandchildren for rides around town. They were the love of his life. “Bahpy” would often be seen cheering them on at a hockey, baseball or softball game.
Mike is survived by his wife Geraldine who have celebrated 51 years of marriage, two children Leah Caruso and her husband Joseph of Chelmsford and Sean Sweeney of Billerica. He was the loving grandfather of Joseph Anthony, Sarah Catherine and Michael John Caruso. Mike was the brother of Joanne Burke of Milford, NH and was predeceased by his sister Barbara McBride and brother Paul Sweeney. He will also be greeted in Heaven by his grand dog Jake, who he adored.
Funeral Friday from the SWEENEY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica at 9 a.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish in St. Theresa Church 466 Boston Rd. Billerica at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held Thursday from 4 – 7 pm. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial in Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica. Per current State Guidelines face coverings will be required. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent DePaul Society, One Grace Ave., Billerica, MA 01821 or to the charity of one’s choice.
