Obituary for Mary P. Chase

Mary P. “Pat” (King) Chase – Age 88, wife of the late Walter F. Chase, Jr., died Wednesday, December 4, 2024 at Benchmark at Billerica Crossings. Born and raised in Somerville on May 10, 1936, Pat was the oldest of six siblings, born to the late John A. and Mildred M. (Halloran) King.

Pat lived the good life.

She loved to entertain. Pat and Walter built a summer home on Pawtuckaway Lake where their family and many friends gathered for weekends and parties. When they moved to Billerica in 1985, they sold the summer home and began a new tradition of having everyone over to “Pat’s Pool”. From Memorial Day Weekend through Labor Day, friends and family enjoyed the pool, snacks, beers, and many laughs with Pat.

Pat’s love of entertaining extended to her care for her grandkids; they were always welcome in her home, and she was known to stock up on the best sweets. Some favorites included: Red Sox Brownie Ice Cream, Cape Cod Fudge Ice Cream, Hoodsie cups, Kirkland’s chocolate-covered raisins, and oatmeal raisin cookies. On mornings after her grandkids slept over, she would make them bacon and microwaved scrambled eggs. The group would then head into the living room where Pat enjoyed the company, her chair, a crossword, and ABC. When her grandkids were ready for the pool, she would head down with them, portable TV in tow to “stream” her favorite soap operas. After an afternoon of swimming, Pat would bring the kids upstairs for dinner. She loved watching Dancing With the Stars with her granddaughter Alyssa on many Monday evenings. Alyssa would sleep over and head off to school the next morning, a benefit of living next door to Pat.

And while Pat was known to create a relaxed space in her home and by the pool, she found fun and joy outside of her home, too. For fifty years, she was an avid bowler in Somerville. She loved painting ceramics with her girlfriends. Post 388 welcomed her and “The Somerville Gang” for drinks and dancing. Pat shared many laughs with friends on Cape Cod at Denise and Dave’s place. She took her grandkids to Disney, Washington D.C., and Mount Washington. She and Walter traveled to Ireland and Hawaii, enjoyed many cruises, and later wintered in Punta Gorda, Florida.

She will always be remembered for her integrity, her firm and strong-willed approach to life, and her kindness and generosity.

Pat is survived by her daughter, Debbie Kent and her husband Chris of Chelmsford; her son, Walter Chase, III, and his wife Cheryl of Billerica; her siblings, Jack King, and his wife Rosalie of East Brookfield, Jimmy King, and his wife Karen of Wakefield, and Sally O’Connor, and her husband Tim of Norwich, CT. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren, Ashley Skerry, and her husband Pete, Christina Rausa, and her husband Joseph; Jared Kent, Robert, Daniel, Alyssa and Kayla Chase; her daughter-in-law, Karen Chase of Billerica. In addition to her husband Walter and her parents John and Mildred, she was predeceased by her son, Michael Chase and her siblings, Margaret King and Paul King.

Many thanks to Benchmark, Billerica Crossings, and Beacon Hospice for taking such great care of her since 2023.
