Obituary for Marth B. Donaldson
Martha B. Donaldson, 89, of Billerica, MA, formerly of Allentown, PA, passed away on April 11, in Billerica, MA. She was the wife of William E. Donaldson. They celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary last November. Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, she was the daughter of the late Paul and Martha (Suchoski) Podkul. She graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Wilkes-Barre. Her career as a registered nurse began with the Red Cross in disaster relief and included work with polio victims, the iron lung, and blood banks. She worked at the former Allentown Hospital (17th & Chew) and was among the first RNs hired when Lehigh Valley Hospital Cedar Crest opened in 1974. She remained there as a night-shift nurse through her retirement in 1985. She chaired the night shift Christmas Party for many years. Martha was a member of the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena in Allentown, PA. She was a member of the Catholic Nurses’ Guild, the Air Force Mother’s Club, and served as a den mother for Cub Scouts. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, nurse, and friend. She loved to make rosaries and Christmas Tree wall art for family, friends and charitable causes. Survivors: Besides her husband, she is survived by a son, Lt. Colonel William P. Donaldson USAF (Ret) and his wife, Tracy of Chelmsford, MA; a daughter, Molly Brown and her husband, Jeff of Allentown; four grandchildren: Craig and Steven Donaldson, Nicole Brendza and her husband, Michael, and Stacy Brown; cousins, nephews and nieces. She was pre-deceased by a sister, Ann Marie Blaustein and brothers, Dr. Theodore Podkul and Paul Podkul. Services: A mass of Christian Burial will take place on Saturday, April 13 at St. Theresa’s Church in Billerica, MA at 9 a.m. Internment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery in West Wyoming, PA. Contributions: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Martha’s name to Bedford Veteran’s Hospital, Volunteer Dept., 200 Springs Rd., Bedford, MA 01730.
