Obituary for Marion E. Tholander
Marion E. Tholander – Age 78, died Monday at the Northwood Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Lowell.
She was born in Billerica, July 19, 1939, a daughter of the late Otis and Dorothy (Kirkland) Tholander and lived in Billerica for most of her life before moving to S. Yarmouth.
Marion was employed at Raytheon in Bedford and later worked for the U.S. Post Office in Boston for 21 years prior to her retirement. She was a very strong lesbian activist and was a member of the Gay Speakers Bureau and has walked in many marches for gay and women’s rights. In the 1970s she worked as the Distribution Manager for the Gay Community News in Boston and later became Managing Editor.
She is survived by her sister, Dorothy Lucia of Hudson, NH and deceased husband Earl; her brother, Otis Tholander and his wife Julie of Martha’s Vineyard and the late David Tholander; her nieces and nephews, Sheryl Martell and her husband Bryon, Mark Lucia, Michelle Conant and her husband Gary, David Lucia, Lisa Perry and her husband Kurt, Sara Tholander, Matthew Tholander and Jason Tholander and his wife Jeanine and ten great nieces and nephew and four great great nephews. She is also survived by her dear friend Janine Bernier and predeceased by her partner Ellen Welch.
THOLANDER – July 16, Marion E. Tholander, Visiting hours will be held Wednesday at the SWEENEY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 4-7 p.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. A graveside service will be held Monday, July 23 at the Fox Hill Cemetery, 130 Andover Rd., Billerica at 12 Noon. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Community Hospice House, c/o Home Health and Hospice, 7 Executive Park Drive, Merrimack, NH 03054.
