Maria (Millie) O. Lopes – Age 89, wife of the late Manuel A. Lopes died peacefully Wednesday, March 1 at the Benchmark Senior Living at Billerica Crossing.
Millie was born in Lisboa, Portugal, May 23, 1933, a daughter of the late Belmiro and Eugenia Alfama. She grew up in Portugal, and later moved to the US where she resided in Brighton MA, Portsmouth OH and Middleton MA before moving to Billerica two years ago.
Prior to her retirement, Maria worked at John Hancock.
Millie is survived by her children, John Lopes and his wife Margie of Billerica (and grandchildren Brenna and Connor), Ricardo Lopes and his wife Gina of Portugal, Paula Saab and her husband Elie of Ohio (and grandchildren Melissa, Megan and Mathew, and great grandchildren Remi and Anagail) and Lena Rogers and her husband Paul of CT (and grandchildren Taylor and Morgan). Surviving in the memory to all who knew Millie is her eldest son Joe who was the light in her life.
Millie had a huge heart, a great sense of humor, loved and was loved by all who shared her life. She leaves an immense void in our hearts.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, March 3 at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 4-7 p.m. A family graveside service will be held Saturday at the Newton Cemetery, 791 Walnut St., Newton at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial contribution to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org
