Obituary for Margaret M. DiPitero
Margaret M. (McSweeney) (Martin) DiPietro died peacefully on August 28th at the age of 85.
Margaret was born on May 25, 1936, daughter of Daniel and Katherine McSweeney and was a lifelong resident of Billerica. She graduated from Howe High School and went on to Merrimack College where she earned her degree in Sociology.
While at Merrimack she met her husband Norman and they were married for 21 years. They had 2 children, built a business, created the Village Vineyard Wine Society and were actively involved in their church and community. After losing Norman in 1978, she reunited with her high school sweetheart “Nino” and they were married in 1982. Nino and Margaret enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their home and spending many wonderful vacations in Aruba and traveling cross country.
In addition to raising her children, Margaret practiced social work in the town of Billerica which she found very rewarding. She owned and operated McSweeney’s Liquors founded by her father in the 1920’s and retired from the Billerica Town Hall where she clerked for the Board of Health and for the Board of Registrars. After her retirement she enjoyed greeting friends as a hostess at Livingstone’ (Manning Manse).
Margaret was currently living with her daughter Maria and her husband Dan in what she liked to call the “Granny Flat ”. She was an avid reader and enjoyed cutting fresh flowers from the garden throughout the seasons. Margaret had a wonderful sense of humor, was thoughtful, compassionate, and truly enjoyed helping others. She would often boast that she was born with the gift of gab and we would laugh and say that she truly never met a stranger. Nothing made Margaret happier then socializing with friends old and new.
Margaret is survived by her daughter Maria M. Drinkwater and son in law Daniel H. Drinkwater of Westford, Marisa (DiPietro) Stahl, David Stahl and their children Samantha and Alexandra of California. She is predeceased by her first husband Norman J. Martin, 2nd husband Anthony J. (Nino) DiPietro and her son Daniel J. Martin. Margaret also leaves behind extended family, neighbors and many dear friends who will miss her deeply.
Margaret’s Funeral Mass will be held Thursday at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish in St. Andrew Church, 35 Talbot Ave. Billerica at 10 a.m. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday at the SWEENEY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial will follow at Fox Hill Cemetery Billerica. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
