Lois M (Coppinger) Spencer, passed peacefully on Thursday, March 13, 2025 at the age of 96.
Lois was the only daughter of Raymond Coppinger and Doris Coppinger. She was predeceased by her late husband, James Spencer, with whom she celebrated 64 years of marriage. Her family takes comfort that he is reunited with his “Princess.”
Lois was a life-long resident of Billerica, MA.
A staple of the community, Lois knew you even if you didn’t know her. She discussed your business with her closest friends in the very last row (left-hand side) of St Mary’s church every Saturday afternoon at 4pm Mass until its closure in 2021.
Weekend mornings Lois could be found in the front windows of her home on Boston Rd, binoculars in hand, evaluating every bride, bridesmaid, guest and floral arrangement entering and leaving the church.
On Thursdays, Lois held a decades-long, weekly hair appointment for a wash, blowdry and set. She took great pride in her appearance and the fact that no living soul had ever seen her without a full face of makeup.
Lois was active in her community, fully involving herself in the activities of the local Sunshine Girls and Red Hat Society. Lois diligently recorded all relevant activities and local gossip in her daily diary entries.
Ever the optimist, Lois never met a scratch ticket, Lottery game or slot machine she didn’t like. In 96 years, Lois never lost faith that the next ticket could be “the one!”
To a special few, Lois was the best “Gub,” short for “Gubaga,” a kid could ask for. “Gubaga” being an early 70’s toddler translation of “Grandmother.” Every holiday a feast of food and gifts. Every birthday a national holiday. Every school vacation filled with adventures. Every meal followed by dessert. Even breakfast.
Lois is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Spencer) Robitaille. Son-in-law, Leo Robitaille. Her three grandchildren, Jim, Adam and Nicole and bonus daughter, Diane Dagle. Lois has entrusted her family with the care of her sweet little dog, Dixie.
A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, March 19th at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish at St. Theresa Church, 466 Boston Rd., Billerica at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica.
In honor of Lois, her family invites you to wear purple to her services.
