Joseph M. Doherty, age 84, beloved husband of Barbara A. (Molloy) Doherty died Thursday at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center with his family by his side.
He was born in Boston, September 6, 1938 a son of the late John and Mary (Lynch) Doherty and grew up in Dorchester before moving to Billerica in 1965.
Joe worked for the former Purity Supreme as a store manager and then as a district manager and went on to own a Lil Peach convenience store in Chelsea.
He was an active member of St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish (St. Theresa Church) in Billerica where he was a Eucharistic Minister, a choir member, altar server and worked in the marriage preparation program for many years.
Joe enjoyed spending time at Point Sebago resort and was a true sports enthusiast having Patriots season tickets for over 50 years as well as attending as many of his children’s and grandchildren’s events as possible.
Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Kathleen Doherty-Thomas and her husband Derek Thomas of Dallas, TX, Michael Doherty and his wife Wendy of Lowell, Timothy Doherty and his wife Vicki of Lowell, Philip Doherty and his wife Stephanie of Andover and John Doherty and his wife Jacki of Billerica; his siblings, Mary Cormier and her husband Ray of Sandwich, Sheila Scannell and her husband Bob of Bridgewater, Ellen Platt and her husband Ryan of Walnut Creek, CA, Jean Nieswand and her husband Steve of Virginia Beach, VA, and Thomas Doherty and his wife Kathy of Marshfield; his sisters-in-law, Pat Doherty of Walpole and Bernadette Doherty of Arlington; his grandchildren Jamie, Michael Jr., Christopher, Samantha, Caitlyn, Emily, Kira, Ethan, Hannah, Conor, Hailey, Lily and Brady as well as seven great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Dr. Philip Doherty and Daniel Doherty.
Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, April 25 at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 3 – 7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Wednesday, April 26, at St. Matthew the Evangelist Parish in St. Theresa Church, 466 Boston Rd. Billerica at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited.
