1925 – 2018 WW II Veteran

BILLERICA – John T. Hatcher, age 93, beloved husband of the late Ardys M. (Yackle) died Thursday, the 27th , at Lowell General Hospital after a brief illness just prior to coming home for hospice care.

He was born in Athens, Georgia, on January 11, 1925 and after crisscrossing the country several times due to his work settled in Billerica where he been a resident for almost 50 years, living in the same house until his death.

John (also known by his nickname Tom) joined the US Navy in 1942 and served aboard the USS Fletcher (DD-445) during WW II in the South Pacific theater receiving the Purple Heart. After the war he traveled up to San Francisco where he met and married Ardys. He had been married to Ardys for over 50 years prior to her passing in 1997. They lived in San Francisco for close to 15 years when he was transferred by his company to start a new facility in Massachusetts. He was an Electro Plating Chemist and Supervisor throughout his career working for companies in California, Massachusetts, Illinois and Rhode Island. He also worked for several local companies in Somerville and Worchester before retiring.

He was a loyal Red Sox fan who was true to the team even when living in other parts of the country. He was an avid gardener who looked forward every spring to starting his vegetable patch. He was well liked by everyone who met him. He was active until the last five years of his life as his health slowed him down.

He is survived by his daughter Beth Hatcher of Burlington and friend of 10 years Cheryl Morris of Billerica, as well as maternal nieces and nephews in the Midwest and on the West Coast. He out-lived all his siblings and close friends.


HATCHER – Of Billerica, Dec. 27, John T. Hatcher. A Funeral Service will be held Monday in the SWEENEY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica at 11 a.m. Visitation will be held from 10 – 11 a.m. prior to the service. Burial in Fox Hill Cemetery, Billerica. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Assn., PO Box 417005, Boston, MA 02241
