Obituary for John F. Rogers
John F. Rogers, age 97, a former longtime resident of Fitchburg, more recently of The Huntington at Nashua, Nashua, NH, died on Wednesday, April 26 in Nashua. He was born in Walden, NY on December 24, 1919, son of the late Lee and Jessie (Dunlap) Rogers. He was the widower of Virginia Ruth (Hyvonen) Rogers who died in 1980, and Marion (Sammet) Daulton-Rogers who died in 2014.
Mr. Rogers was a 1937 graduate of Fitch burg High School and a 1968 graduate of Worcester Junior College with an associate degree in metallurgical engineering. He retired in 1981 from Simonds Saw & Steel Company, Fitchburg where he worked for 42 ½ years as a production and research metallurgical engineer. He served in the U. S. Army, European Theater during WW II in the 965th Engineer Maintenance Company, and also in the 3908th Signal Service Battalion.
He was a former active member of Rollstone Congregational Church, Fitchburg where he served on the investment committee, the music committee, and sang in the choir for many years. He was a leader in the early development of Camp Wellville in Ashburnham. He also sang in the choir at the Naples United Church of Christ and in the community chorus of Riverwoods Plantation while he and Marion enjoyed 21 years in Estero, FL during the winter months. During high school he played the trombone in the marching band, orchestra, and dance band. He also sang in the Leonard Gaskins Chorale. He had a keen interest in family genealogy and over the years enjoyed camping, hiking, bicycle riding, gardening, and home remodeling. He was an avid RV owner and with Marion, toured the U. S. and Canada. They moved from Fitchburg to Nashua in 2006.
He leaves 4 children, Judy Evancic, wife of the late Ernie Evancic, of Kittery, ME, Stephen Rogers, husband of Linda (Hession) of Deland, FL, Carol Ann Rogers-Sourbutts, wife of Steven of Ashburnham, and Shelley Ayers, wife of Carl of NH; 7 grandchildren, Geoffrey Evancic, Jennifer Evancic, Timothy Rogers, Brian Rogers, Shane Paul Ibanez, Jorge Luis Ibanez, and Virginia Louise Ibanez; 9 great grandchildren; step-children, June Daulton Haskell, Nashua, NH, Dr. Bonnie Erickson, Galax, VA and Dennis Daulton (Janis), Rockport, MA. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Louise Ann Rogers, in 1944, a grandson, Christopher Evancic, his sister, Catharine Dennihan, and a son-in-law, Ernie Evancic.
Relatives and friends are cordially invited to a visitation at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Road, Billerica on Monday from 4 to 6 PM with a prayer service to be held at the conclusion. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund at The Huntington of Nashua, 55 Kent Lane, Nashua, NH 03062-2807, which will benefit student employees in continuing their education. Committal services will be held at Forest Hill Cemetery in Fitchburg at the convenience of the family following cremation.
