Evelyn (McCue) Cooke, 97, of Billerica, Massachusetts, beloved wife of the late Charles P. Cooke, passed away peacefully Wednesday, June 10, at Sunny Acres.
Evelyn was born and raised in Woburn. She worked for the phone company straight out of high school. It was there in Woburn, that Evelyn met Charlie. They wed in 1949 and were married for 50 years.
In 1958 they moved the family to Billerica—their friends thought it was way out in the woods coming from Woburn. In 1964 Evelyn and Charlie founded the C.P. Cooke Oil Company. The business thrived for 37 years. Every customer knew Evelyn’s upbeat voice would be on the other end of the phone helping them—and never failing to ask about their families. Evelyn was the heart and soul of the C.P. Cooke Oil Company.
Charlie and Evelyn were active members of the community with their involvement and support of Billerica Pop Warner, Billerica Elks, the Elks Scholarship Fund, Toys for Tots, and the Emblem Club.
Evelyn’s Thanksgiving dinners were phenomenal. She worked for days ahead of time preparing the food and table settings. She enjoyed having the whole family together around the many dinner tables.
Evelyn enjoyed spending time with her 11 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren and always looked forward to their visits. She loved each one dearly. She is survived by her four children, Stephanie Saunders of Hampton, NH, Charlie and Barbie Cooke of Billerica, MA, David Cooke of Ellington, CT, and Robert and Kandi Cooke of Derry, NH. She will be deeply missed by all of them. Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, Tom and Loretta McCue and her son-in-law, Russell Saunders, whom she loved dearly.
Family and friends are invited to gather in Evelyn’s honor at Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Road Billerica, MA. Visiting hours will be held on Friday, June 19, from 11am-1pm. Burial will follow immediately after at Fox Hill Cemetery, 130 Andover Rd, Billerica, MA.
Memorial contributions may be made in Evelyn’s name to the Elks Scholarship Fund.
