Obituary for David W. Martell

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David Martell on October 1st, 2024, after a courageous two-year battle with cancer. Born to Kenneth and the late Joan Martell, David, affectionately known as "Davey" by his friends and "Da" by his four adoring grandchildren, left an indelible mark on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

A lifelong resident of Billerica, David graduated from Billerica Memorial High School with the class of 1975 and spent over five decades dedicated to his career at DeMoulas Supermarkets. With over 50 years of loyal service, David’s work ethic, loyalty, and kindness touched countless colleagues and customers alike. He was not just a familiar face, but a pillar of the community, embodying humility and hard work.

In 1979, David married his high school sweetheart, Judy Mollicone, and together they built a beautiful life centered on love, laughter, and family. Their bond was unbreakable, a love story that spanned decades and inspired all who witnessed it. David took the greatest pride in his role as a husband, father, and grandfather. His heart was fullest when surrounded by family, especially his daughter Ashley Dekow, son Adam Martell, daughter-in-law Rachel Martell, and son-in-law Jason Dekow. He delighted in being an active presence in his grandchildren's lives, showering them with love and wisdom, always ready with a kind word, a laugh, or a helping hand.

David and Judy loved taking trips together, especially to the seacoast of Maine and the mountains and lakes of New Hampshire, often joined by family and friends. These cherished escapes were filled with laughter and memories that will live on in the hearts of those who traveled with them.

Outside of work and family, David found peace in the simple joys of life. He loved spending time outdoors, meticulously tending to his yard and caring for the swimming pool that was the backdrop to many wonderful family memories. Whether he was mowing the lawn or hosting a summer barbecue, David always found ways to make those around him feel loved and cared for.

David’s passion for sports began early in life, playing a variety of them as a child. He remained a devoted fan of Boston’s teams; cheering on the Bruins, Patriots, Red Sox, and Celtics throughout the years, sharing the highs and lows of each season with his loved ones.

David’s quiet strength, humility, and unwavering devotion to those he loved will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew him. He leaves behind a legacy of love, generosity, and a spirit that will live on in his family and friends.

He is survived by his beloved wife Judy, his children Ashley and Adam, his daughter-in-law Rachel, son-in-law Jason, and his cherished grandchildren Eve, Nash, Luke, and Vivian. He is also lovingly survived by his father Kenneth, his brothers Kenneth Jr., Daniel, Thomas, his sister Joan, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. David will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in honor of David's brave battle. Rest in peace Dave, your love will live on in all of us forever.
