Obituary for David C. Varrell
Age 73, beloved husband of Brenda M.F. (Dugard) Varrell died unexpectedly Wednesday, May 22, at their home. He was born in Lewiston, ME, May 9, 1940, the son of the late Raymond and Elizabeth (Hanscom) Varrell and was raised in Poland Spring, ME and moved to Billerica in 1966. Mr. Varrell was an United States Air Force veteran, having served as an USAFSS airborne intercept operator (Russian linguist) who flew recon missions with the 6916th SS at Rhein-Main and Incirlik in1960 and 1961. He studied at Syracuse University and Northeastern University. Dave was a retired electronics technician and most recently worked as a handy-man and jack-of-all-trades for the Billerica Recreation Department. He was active in the community and participated in and supported numerous charities. His friendly and generous nature allowed him to make many lifelong friends. Dave was always willing to help someone in need, be they friends or strangers. He enjoyed many hobbies, including antique cars, jigsaw puzzles, travel, reading (aerospace and history), genealogy, small engine repair, fishing, canoeing, bird watching, and supporting the Boston Bruins and Boston Red Sox. However, Dave's true passion was building and flying radio-controlled airplanes. He was a long-time member of the Middlesex County Radio Controlled Flyers and could very often be found flying his planes at Billerica's Vietnam Veterans Park flying field. Dave greatly enjoyed spending time with family and especially his two grandsons. He spent the final years of his life dedicated to providing constant love, care and support to his wife of 51 years. Besides his wife, Mr. Varrell is survived by his daughter, Alison Varrell of Chelmsford; his son, Matthew Varrell and his wife, Amy of Holliston; his sister, Jennie Thurlow of Poland Spring, ME and his two grandsons, Nicholas and Jacob Varrell of Holliston. He was the brother of the late Charles and Norris Varrell, Rose Frees, Phyllis Chernewski. He will also be missed by numerous family members across the United States and the United Kingdom.
