David A. Pontes, son of the late Clara (Sanchez) Pontes and Pedro DeBritto Pontes, passed away on March 25, 2024 after a long battle with lung disease. David was a strong willed man who courageously fought to the very end.
David is a graduate of New Bedford High School and Salem State College. He was employed in the IT/hi-tech industry for over 45 years working on cutting edge technology for Wang Laboratories, Lotus, IRIS Associates and IBM. David loved coaching youth basketball, baseball, and challenger’s division sports. David was honored to receive the Presidential Lifetime Achievement Award for his community service efforts and the YMCA Black Achievers Award.
He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Rebecca (Becky), and three sons, Anthony, Jacob and Cameron, all of Billerica. He also leaves behind 4 brothers and 3 sisters: Paul (Haverhill), Joseph (San Diego), Alvaro (Cambridge), Antonio (Boston), Theresa (New Bedford), Anna (New Bedford), and Teresa (Cambridge), and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, sister Rose Marie Sanchez, and niece Jade Pontes.
Visiting hours will be held Monday, April 1 at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 4-7 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, 47 S 6th St., New Bedford at 11 a.m. David’s burial will take place at the Rural Cemetery, 149 Dartmouth St., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Dave’s honor to the Special Olympics, www.specialolympics.org
