Obituary for Alan W. Hewson

Alan W. Hewson, 76, died Tuesday at Wentworth Douglass Hospital in Dover, NH after a period of declining health. He was born in Arlington, MA on November 25, 1947 and was son of the late Arthur W. and Margaret M. (Donovan) Hewson.

Alan proudly served in the US Air Force in the military police during the Vietnam War, attaining the rank of Sgt. During his time in Vietnam he began exchanging letters with his sister Janet's best friend, Virginia "Ginny" McLean. Upon completing his duties in the US Air Force, Alan returned home where he and Ginny fell in love and were married on August 19, 1972. They settled in Billerica, MA where together they began raising a family.

Alan founded Hewson Construction, where he worked for many years until Ginny suffered a stroke in 2004. He then dedicated his life to caring for his loving wife until her death on November 4, 2015. Al and Ginny were well-matched in their humor and dedication for each other. Much laughter was heard in the Hewson household.

Along with the love of his life, Virginia Ann (McLean) Hewson, Alan is predeceased by his parents Arthur and Margaret; his brother, Robert Hewson; his sisters Janet Brightman and Sandra MacIntosh; and his half-brother Arthur Hewson.

He is survived by two sons, Kevin Hewson and his wife Stephanie of Dover, NH, and David Hewson of Billerica; three grandchildren, Jacob Hewson and his wife Kaytlin, of Billerica, Kyle Hewson of Lowell, and Owen Hewson of Dover; great-grandson JJ Hewson of Billerica as well as several cousins, nieces, nephews and close friends.

Visiting hours will be held Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Sweeney Memorial Funeral Home, 66 Concord Rd., Billerica from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. followed by a graveside service at the Fox Hill Cemetery, 130 Andover Rd., Billerica at 1:30 p.m. Relatives and friends respectfully invited.
